Clothes are the part of family photos people stress about most. Relax. A few simple rules get you ninety percent of the way there, and Wyoming weather adds a couple of its own.
Coordinate, do not match
Skip the identical white shirts and jeans. Pick a palette of two or three colors and let everyone wear something different inside it. Earth tones look great against our canyons and fields: rust, cream, olive, denim, mustard and soft browns. One person in a pattern is plenty.
Dress for the wind
Wyoming wind is real. Long dresses and loose hair look beautiful moving, but plan for it. Bring hair ties and a jacket for between shots. Thin fabrics photograph better with a layer over them on a breezy evening.
Layers in every season
Fall sessions can start warm and end cold once the sun drops. Sweaters, denim jackets, scarves and flannels add texture and keep kids happy. In winter, go for chunky knits and real coats. Nobody smiles while freezing.
Shoes that can walk
Many of our best spots are a short walk on dirt or rock. Wear shoes you can move in and bring the cute ones if you want. Bare feet in the grass can be lovely too.
Avoid these
- Big logos and graphic tees, they pull the eye away from faces.
- Neon colors, they cast color onto skin.
- Brand new shoes that have not been broken in.
Kids and dogs
Dress kids in something comfortable so they can play. Bring a snack and a favorite toy. Dogs are welcome, a bandana in your palette is a fun touch.
